img_5933.jpgHere I am after getting my backpack ready to climb Mt. Fuji! We will leave tomorrow morning and take train and bus to go halfway up Mt. Fuji. Then we will start the 5-8 hour trek up to the top. Mt. Fuji is 3776 meters high, so it will be a bit of a challenge, but I hope we can get some really nice pictures, especially of the sun coming up in the morning. The sun will rise around 4:45am, the earliest in all of Japan. I borrowed the bag from one of my co-workers, and it is just the right size 40 liters. I got lots of water, some cans of oxygen, coat, change of clothes, and some other things. And even though Tokyo will be around 36 degrees tomorrow, we will be near 0 – 10 degrees. So, should be nice and cool. Well, I better get going to bed as we will have a long trip up the mountain tomorrow. We will be spending the night in a hut, but won’t be sleeping for very long. We will make sure to take lots of pictures and post about the experience when we get back. So check back soon!

    David,

I found this website that gives information about climbing Mt. Fuji in the winter season. It sounds pretty dangerous, you need an experienced guide from the 6th station, and above the 8th station is very dangerous. I occasionaly hear about people trying to climb it, and they end up dying, so beware…

I’m not sure what the conditions will be like, perhaps there is some place you can call. But at this moment, it is pretty much covered in snow and will get worse. I hear every year about people who die trying to climb it in the winter, so be careful. It should only be done by professionals… take a look at the link I posted in the comments for more information.

    Hi Jon,

do you know if snowshoes would be useful? how about crampons?

I presume end of november is too early to ski it?

I am planning on trying on the night of Thursday November 22nd (as my plane leaves on the 24th)… if anyone is interested contact me… hbriceno

I had planned to trek to the summit on or around that day, I will fly out of Japan on the 25th. I was planning a walk from base level, camping at the 5th station, I would then look to trek the summit. Reason for camping was that the 5th station hut would not open for one person (would close after the end of the month for the winter). I did not want to start my trek from half way up hence the extra days walk in.

If you wanted to meet for the last leg of the journey 5th through to the summit then that could be a plan? if so let me know I will confirm my route.

What are the summit conditions of Mt. Fuji right now? I am looking at doing the hike starting from the 5th station. I have warm clothes and all of my general camping gear but did not bring snow gear with me.

Is the summit accessible without snow shoes or crampons?

Anyone that is interested in tagging along or doing this as a group feel free to contact me at jghutchinson@me.com – I am planning on taking the train out from Shinjuku station Friday early afternoon.
